4 Risks of Sora and Similar Technological Tools
Sora and similar technological tools are developments I follow with both great interest and serious concern. Why concern? Let’s take a closer look.
Those who know me well are aware of my interest in technological developments. As someone who joined Facebook before it was even available in Turkish, I have witnessed for years how rapidly the digital world has evolved. From the early days of social media to today, what I have seen is that platforms designed to bring people together also carry great opportunities and serious risks.
In fact, I was among the first people to write about the “harms of social media.”
The reason I wrote that article was an incident I personally witnessed. To summarize briefly: many years ago, on a webmaster forum, the photos of a webmaster friend’s fiancée were taken from her Facebook account, which was “visible only to friends.” Using the technology of that time, those photos were edited with image-editing software and uploaded to inappropriate websites. Notice that I am talking about something that happened many years ago.
Today, however, AI-powered tools—especially advanced technologies such as “Sora”—may redefine the way the internet is used. Yet alongside the convenience these tools offer, there are also serious dangers.
For example, the scenario I mentioned above could now be adapted with Sora not only as an image, but as a video. And this is only one example.
Let’s examine in detail why AI technologies such as Sora may pose risks for social media users:
-
Sora and Similar Tools: Beyond Imagination
Sora is an AI tool developed by OpenAI that can generate realistic videos, visuals, and content from text prompts. Although this may sound unbelievable for now, the technology is truly revolutionary—and it also introduces new risks for social media users.
What Can These Tools Do?
- Video and Image Generation: They can create videos that look real using only a few sentences of description.
- Voice Imitation: They can even analyze your own voice and generate fake conversations.
- Targeted Content Creation: They can produce fully personalized content using user data.
“To explain this a little further, by uploading just one facial image and a very short voice sample of the target person, it may become possible to create a video of that person saying anything you want in their own voice…”
Although these technologies may revolutionize entertainment and education, trusting them without understanding the risks of misuse would be a major mistake.

The Dangers Sora Creates on Social Media
Deepfake: It Is Becoming Harder to Distinguish Real from Fake
Deepfake is one of the most controversial capabilities of AI tools such as Sora. With this technology, it is possible to create speeches, videos, and visuals that appear to belong to a real person but are entirely fabricated.
Damage to Reputation:
Imagine someone you do not even know sharing a fake video using your face and voice. Wouldn’t that easily damage your reputation? (And then you would have to struggle to explain yourself)
Spread of Misinformation:
Content created with deepfake technology can spread rapidly on social media. False information may create panic in society or influence important processes such as elections.
Cyberbullying:
Deepfake videos have started to become one of the methods used in cyberbullying against individuals. Don’t you think people’s social media accounts, bank accounts, and personal devices may also be at risk? Below is an example of cyberbullying:

The Security of Your Personal Data Is at Risk
Tools such as Sora can generate content by using data shared on social media. This may seriously threaten individuals’ privacy.
Use of Your Photos:
Your profile photos or shared images may be analyzed by AI and used to create new content.
Copying Your Voice:
A voice recording you share on social media may allow AI to create fake speeches on your behalf. Just imagine an audio recording—or even a video—where you appear to insult someone or a public figure.
Legal Issues and Copyright Violations
Content created by Sora may lead to copyright violations. For example, it could generate something similar to an artwork you created and put you in an unfair position.

How Can We Protect Ourselves?
After explaining all this, let’s move on to my thoughts about how we can protect ourselves.
Improve Your Digital Awareness
Learning about the existence of technologies such as deepfake and being able to recognize such content is the first step. Digital literacy is one of the most important tools for dealing with these technologies.
Be Careful with Suspicious Content:
Do not assume that every video you see on social media is real.
Check the Source:
Evaluate whether the content is reliable by checking its source. Also be careful with friend requests, messages from friends, and links inside those messages.
Use Technology Against Technology
Deepfake detection tools can help you identify fake content. Wider use of such tools may help make technology safer.
Legal Support and Regulations
Governments should develop legal regulations for the ethical use of artificial intelligence technologies. In addition, legal mechanisms should be created so individuals can defend their rights against privacy violations.
-
The Responsibility of Social Media Platforms Against Sora and Similar Technologies
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok should take stricter measures to prevent the spread of AI-generated fake content.
Content Detection:
Algorithms should be developed to automatically detect deepfake content.
User Education:
Platforms should organize campaigns to raise user awareness about these risks.
We Must Be Prepared for the Future
AI tools such as Sora are accelerating the evolution of the internet and social media. However, when these technologies are used without control, they may threaten individuals’ privacy and security.
As conscious users, we must learn how to protect ourselves and raise our voices for the ethical use of these technologies.

Because the internet is a shared living space for all of us.
